Member Services and Programs

Genesis Development creates opportunities, choices and support for people with disabilities. We have been doing this since 1973 and we are only here for the people that we serve. Without them, there is no Genesis Development. Through the years, our industry has evolved and we have grown and changed with it.

Employment Services staff assist each person in obtaining employment in the community matching their interests, abilities, and needs. Individuals receive instruction in job-search techniques, appropriate interviewing skills and how to successfully maintain a job.

Genesis Development’s Facility-Based Employment offers a variety of opportunities for individuals to improve their work skills. Emphasis is placed on assessing the current level of performance and providing structure and training. Using a team approach, the individual is assisted with basic work skills including attendance, promptness, safety, respect for property and appropriate personal hygiene. Productivity is increased with attention to listening to and following directions, increasing performance with repetition of tasks, displaying initiative and attending to tasks. Interpersonal skills such as honesty, accepting correction and direction, requesting assistance and working with others are also developed.

Employment Planning and Development Services

A variety of services fall within this category, including Community Work Site Assessments, Career Exploration, Job Shadowing Assessments and Facility Work Site Assessments. These services assist the client and the team in determining vocational options, direction, work skills, work habits and behaviors, work pace, accommodations, goals and training strategies. The purpose of Employee Planning and Development is to enhance the client’s ability to find and keep a job. Work Adjustment Training is a program that remedies negative work habits and behaviors, improves work tolerance and develops strategies to improve an individual’s ability to maintain employment. The Hope Wellness Center is a safe place for individuals who may be experiencing a mental health crisis. At HWC, those individuals can voluntarily access crisis intervention services.

Hope Wellness Crisis Center

The Hope Wellness Crisis Center began as a collaboration between the Heart of Iowa Community Services Region and Genesis Development Mental Health Services to create a more effective approach to mental crisis treatment and to reduce health care costs. Individuals typically stay at the Hope Wellness Crisis Center less than one week. During that time they are connected to a network of appropriate community resources to assist in their recovery.

Hope Wellness Transitional Living Center

The purpose of the Transitional Living Center is to provide short term (2-3 months) housing for an individual coming out of a placement or hospitalization who needs to redevelop skills to be successful in the community. Individuals who are living with mental health or disabilities will be paired with a variety of service providers to assist them to reach their highest levels of independence.
